GANS is now accepting nominations and submission for both its Award of Recognition and Award of Excellence.

Award of Recognition:

This Award is intended to recognize an individual who has made an exceptional personal and/or professional contribution to the field of aging through either an enhancement to the understanding of aging, or by providing service to the field through research, advocacy, professional or volunteer work. Exceptional for this Award means that the individual has gone above and beyond what would be expected of them in his/her professional or volunteer capacity.

Award of Excellence:

Each year GANS offers an Award to a student currently registered in a publicly funded post-secondary educational institution in Nova Scotia. The Award is intended to recognize and promote excellence in the field of aging and to encourage involvement in our Association. To be eligible for this Award, a substantive portion of the student’s academic program must focus on aging. The student should have a strong academic record, be able to demonstrate his/her contribution to the field through academic/volunteer activities and to have professional goals that include study or work in the field of aging. The student may be enrolled full or part time at any level of academic study. In addition to the application form and resume, a letter in support of the student’s application is required from a faculty member.

Understanding the mechanisms of ageing – worth a Nobel Prize!

Three American scientists Elizabeth Blackburn (University of California, San Fransisco) , Carol Greider (Johns Hopkins University) and Jack Szostak (Harvard Medical School), have been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for their discovery of how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase.

Telomere

Telomere

In short:

“Telomeres are the tails of chromosomes; they are an indicator of history and replicative potential of the cell. Research in the last three decades indicates that telomeres are key factors in several biological fields such as cancer and ageing. Because of the long lifespan of humans and their short telomeres, attrition in telomere length may be a major determinant of human ageing not only at cellular level, but also at organ and perhaps systemic levels. The research contributed to the understanding of how telomeres protect chromosomes from degradation and identified telomerase, the enzyme that preserves telomere length and integrity.” (read the full article here)

Recent studies carried out by the prize recipients have shown that the enzyme telomerase has restorative capabilities for telomeres and can help keep these cells in a healthy condition. Dr. Jean Pierre Baeyens, of the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics says “…the ageing process remains a large domain of research and all mechanisms are not depicted yet. These recent discoveries are a real step forward to attract young scientist to the new fields of research and clinical practice in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology.”

Gerontological Society of America Annual Meeting

The Gerontological Society of America’s (GSA) 62nd annual meeting is taking place this year November 18-22,  in Atlanta, Georgia.

“This year we welcome our meeting-goers to Atlanta, Georgia. The theme for GSA’s 62nd Annual Meeting is “Creative Approaches to Healthy Aging”. This topic reaches across all of GSA’s professional sections and embraces the interdisciplinary nature of its membership – challenging each of us to look at the goals of our work somewhat differently.

2009_am_regdeadline GSA’s Annual Scientific Meeting brings together more than 3,500 of the brightest minds in the field of aging. This meeting is the premier gathering of gerontologists from both the United States and around the world. They participate in over 400 scientific sessions including symposia, paper, and poster presentations.”

Graduate Gerontology Program

MSVULOGO

Mount Saint Vincent University has both undergraduate and graduate gerontology programs through their Department of Family Studies and Gerontology. The programs allow students to explore many theoretical streams, acquire advocacy skills and understand how community programs are developed.
