What is HRC@P?

C@P is a government of Canada initiative to provide Internet access to those who would not normally have it due to economic, social or geographic barriers. Currently 40 C@P sites in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) provide urban and rural communities affordable access to computers and the internet. Many C@P sites offer computer training including MS Office, Internet safety, Global Positioning Systems, video podcasting, and web page development. HRCAP provides over 15 full time jobs and injects over $1.7 million in the local economy, annually.

What is the Digital Divide?

“…the gap between people with effective access to digital and information technology, and those with very limited or no access at all. It includes the imbalance both in physical access to technology and the resources and skills needed to effectively participate as a digital citizen.”

GANS online forum project receives funding from NS Dept of Seniors

GANS is pleased and excited to announce that our application to the Nova Scotia Department of Seniors Positive Aging Fund was successful!

The GANS proposal involves development of an online forum section to this website. We aim to create an online forum that is a discussion place foseniors-and-computer1r Seniors in Nova Scotia, and anyone who works with or for them.  To accomplish this, we are partnering with the Community Access Program (C@P).

C@P will help us deliver not only a useful and engaging online hub for discussions and information sharing, but will assist us in one of the key components to this:  two tiers of learning for Seniors – how to use the forum, and how to teach other seniors to us it as well.

With much of Nova Scotia soon to have access to broadband internet service, we think this online forum can be a great way for Seniors to reach out to each other and create online communities for socializing and helping each other.

The GANS board will meet soon to work out the details of implementing this project – so watch this space!

The Digital Divide – have your say!

The Digital Divide is the gap between those with reliable and effective access to internet and infromtaion technology, and those with limited or no access. example

The Community Access Program (C@P), an initiative of the government of Canada, provides “Internet access to those who would not normally have it due to economic, social or geographic barriers. Currently 40 C@P sites in the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) provide urban and rural communities affordable access to computers and the internet.”

C@P currently has an online survey that wants to find out where you stand in the Digital Divide. You can pop by the Halifax Regional C@P site to check them out, and link to the survey directly here.
