British Home Children to be honoured at tree planting.
Trees will be planted at the Hector Exhibit Centre in Pictou this October in memory of the 100,000 British children sent to Canada between 1869 and the 1930′s.
According to the story in the Sunday Herald (August 30, 2009) : “Called the Child Emigration Scheme, the plan removed orphans and impoverished children from communities all over Britain and sent them to Canada where many were settled with farm families as labourers and servants. Some were as young as four, and many were bounced from home to home. They are now known as the British Home Children, and they account for the parentage of about 10 per cent of Canada’s population.”
